The Case Your Mind Is Building Against You

Something happened. A silence that went on a beat too long. An email that hasn't been answered. A comment that could have meant several things but somehow, in your mind, only means one. And now it's Friday and you're still there. Still turning it over. Still looking for the version of events that finally settles it.

The women this pattern runs in hardest are often the most perceptive, the most attuned—the deepest meaning-makers in any room. That's not a coincidence. The same depth that makes them exceptional at reading situations, people and subtleties that others miss is exactly what makes the rumination so consuming. They're not spinning an unconvincing story. They're constructing something detailed and internally consistent because that's what an intelligent mind does with the material it's given.

There's a belief system running underneath the rumination. And that belief system has an agenda: to find evidence of your deficiency. So when something ambiguous it doesn't rest in the uncertainty. It goes to work. It takes the available information, runs it through its lens and builds a case.

This is how a strength that serves you everywhere else gets recruited by the belief system and turned against you. And it's why the content feels so convincing. It has the texture of genuine insight rather than distortion. Meditation teacher Joseph Goldstein describes this kind of thinking as masquerading as wisdom. A wise-sounding voice that feels so valid, so true, that we don't question it.

The mind will always find the right hook to make the case believable. One of my clients—a physician —was working a shift and stayed silent during rounds, afraid of saying the wrong thing and exposing what she was certain was inadequacy. By the end of her shift, she had convinced herself that every resident in that room had reached the same conclusion. She didn't know enough. What she had filtered out entirely was something a nurse had mentioned to her casually that same day. People love working her shifts because she runs them so well. Clear evidence that her staff trusted her completely. The belief system had taken that information and set it aside. 

The work to shift a thinking pattern that stems from this kind of belief system begins with developing what's sometimes called the observing self.

That’s the capacity to step back from your thinking and look at it. To notice the interpretation as an interpretation. 

This is metacognition—thinking about your thinking—and it's one of the most powerful high performance tools available. My client began practising it and the changes were significant. She could catch the thought of incompetence arising in real time and question it rather than follow it. She could see what she was reinforcing each day and what it was costing her. The low-level rumination that had been consuming her energy began to quiet. She felt better. The days felt lighter. She had been ready to leave medicine entirely. Not because the work wasn't fulfilling but because the way she was relating to herself inside the work had become unbearable. The job wasn't the problem. The case her mind was building against her was.

That silence that went on a beat too long. That email. That comment. None of them have only one meaning, even when the mind insists otherwise. Learning to see the interpretation as an interpretation rather than the truth is not a small thing. It's the difference between a mind that works against you and one that works for you.
